Hi I'm Wayne Jepsen. I'm finishing my BIS degree this semester with concentrations in Art History and Religious Studies. The art history is quite interesting, but religion consumes much more of my focus. I find myself to be a very spitirual person, though I would never say religious. The art history aids in my comprehension of cultures, symbols, and myths.
My applied studies site is at Corona del Sol High School. I am working with the Humanities teacher there whose cirriculum in mainly art history and religion/philosophy. I hope to learn what it is like to actually be a teacher, not a student who is intaking some presentation, but as an on-looker who interacts with the teacher between classes and learns how she presents herself to her audience.
So far I have looked through her schedule for the rest of the semester and have chosen a topic to teach to her class in the future. It will most likely be a comprehensive overview of Reality as described by the numerous religions and philosophies, and will be supplemented with art from cultures past and present. Such a topic related directly to my degree and concentration areas.
After graduation I plan to apply to the PeaceCorps and be a member for at least two years. I believe it will be an enriching experience that I may not find from other sources. I will most likely be doing some form of education with the PeaceCorps, and this will help me to decide if education will be the career for me. The current internship will also help me to decide if education is right for me because my mentor will allow me to sit in on classes in which the teacher has no control over his/her students, and one who has complete control. It will be a very dynamic experience (as highschool always is) and I look forward to continuing my work there.

Hi Wayne. I was really interested to read about your internship. Getting hands-on experience when dealing with kids is completely different than sitting in a classroom learning how to be a good teacher. I thought I wanted to be a teacher when I was in high school, but after volunteering for an after school program I realized teaching wasn't for me. One of my concentrations is Religious Studies, so the topic you chose to teach for a future class intrigued me. It doesn't sound like something that is generally taught, even in high school. My first exposure in an academic setting to some of the Eastern religions wasn't until college. Joining the PeaceCorp sounds like a very admirable step. What inspired you to join? Good luck with your internship and hopefully you'll know if education is right for you.
ReplyDeleteHi Wayne,
ReplyDeleteWhen I responded to your e-mail about the Peace Corps and needing ESL teaching experience, I wasn't thinking about the fact that your internship is already in a classroom where you are gaining first hand teaching experience. I would also count this as volunteer work as far as the Peace Corps goes. Tell them that you were a volunteer intern. I think that this experience will definitely help you with your application. BTW- have you turned in your application yet? It could take up to two years to be accepted. In my case it took a little under a year from the time I applied to the time I left, but that was considered fast.
I look forward to reading about your internship and keep me posted with the Peace Corps stuff.

Hey Wayne,
ReplyDeleteYes, High School is always a dynamic experience. I hope you're doing well and that the students are treating you well, too. It sounds like you'll have a great grasp of how teaching would influence your degree. It seems like this internship will give you a great feel for what you'd like to do after graduation with the Peace Corps. I have a friend in the Dominican Republic with the Peace Corps- she's been there for almost a year now. It seems like she has really learned a lot and is enjoying herself. She posts a blog about it, and I always enjoy reading how she is doing and hearing about how different her experiences are in the DR. I hope you have the same success!
Best of luck with your classroom at Corona! Talk with you soon.
